What are “public servants” and/or “the common good?”

Below are a few terms worthy of discussion and definition in a network of Public Servants for the Common Good.


What follows are my own hot takes, straight from own head. Have reactions, comments, a different take? Please share it in the comments so that I can generate next drafts that help people recognize their belonging in this network.


Also, I'd love to know: what terms are missing that warrant a shared understanding in the creation of this network?


Common good

The “common good” is that which serves the ability of an entire society or community to thrive, necessitating that each individual is equitably supported to thrive, yet also that the the well-being of all is the shared, ultimate priority.


Public servant

A “public servant” seeks, chooses, and acts in roles and responsibilities that apply their skills and experience to public service.


Public service

“Public service” is any enterprise pursued for the purpose of promoting the common good first and foremost; or, that which serves “the public” as its definition of success, as opposed to profit or any other benefit intended primarily for private use by individuals or organizations.


Calling

A “calling” is an activity or career pursued in response to a belief, feeling, or hunch that aligns to a sense of “raison d'être.”
